Journals in a Jiffy!

I attended a training for our new science series this week and a little thing that we did in the first ten minutes made the whole 2 days worthwhile. I think this is one of those things that I've seen before, but forgot about and I'm so glad I was reminded of it this week!

So, if I'm a little late to the party forgive me, but I thought this was a great little tip to pass along. (You may also want to get your sunglasses, this paper turned nuclear when I photographed it!) These are super easy, make in a snap journals. These happen to be for science, but you can use them so many different ways. (If you like these for science, I uploaded the covers here).

First, fold some blank paper inside the cover. Then make a slit on the spine at the top and bottom. Slide a rubber band into the slit and PRESTO! A cute little journal! No staples, no fuss, no muss.

If your journal gets all scrunchy like this one,  make your slits a little longer or use a longer rubber band.
I loved this idea, but I prefer for my kids to have lined paper to write on.
So, with just a little tweak, you can easily have a lined journal.
As a general rule, putting rubber bands in the hands of seven year olds might sound a little scary, but this is so darn awesome, I just may have to take my chances! If you've used these before, leave me a comment. I'd love to hear about it!

  1. I forgot all about this handy little trick! Thanks for the reminder. I made them once for my kindergartners for something... can't remember. My third graders can do it themselves! =) I'm going to the training Monday, hope it's a good one!

  3. I love that idea, too! I make journals by cutting several pieces of paper (filler) like you did with 2 slits along the fold. Then take one sheet of paper and fold to match the other pieces. Now unfold it and fold the other way. Cut along that fold like you are cutting the middle of the fold on the filler paper. Then fold it the original way. Roll up the filler paper and stick it in the gap of the one piece. Let it unroll, match up the folds, and you have a book. It is really a lot simpler than it sounds. Email me and I will do it with pictures if you are interested. I have my 2nd graders do it last year and they loved it. They made their own books all the time!

  10. I saw a blog titled "write on! for kids". It gave several great sites for writing activities. Now, I can't find it again. Can you lead me in the write direction? Thank you so much!
